About Pinkney Grunwells

“We aim to provide clear, concise and cost-effective private and commercial legal advice”

As one of the largest law firms in the area with a history dating back to the late 1930s, Pinkney Grunwells has built up a pretty impressive reputation for expertise, excellence, fair pricing, professionalism, and sheer quality of service.

And for the firm’s three partners – solicitors Teresa Bennion and Hayley Garnett, plus operations manager Daniel Boynton – upholding these values is at the core of their company’s mission.

“We aim to provide clear, concise and cost-effective private and commercial legal advice,” Daniel explained, “but it’s the way we do it that makes us stand out. We’ve been supporting our local communities for decades. In a similar way to a family doctor who’s there for people through the generations, we aim to be their family solicitor.

“Our clients range in age from young adults buying their first home, to older people arranging their wills or managing their businesses. Whatever their legal needs, we want to be at their side throughout their lifetime.”

"We know and understand our communities."

Having five local offices means the 60-strong team are easily accessible, as clients can drop by during office hours. The lawyers can travel between sites at their clients’ convenience if a particular area of legal knowledge is required, and their field of expertise covers a huge range of topics in both the domestic and business arena.

Daniel added: “We know and understand our communities. We’re not like a city firm with inflated fees, we’re proud to represent the people we live amongst.”

Going above and beyond

Back in 1938 when solicitor Bill Pinkney opened his office in Bridlington, could he have foreseen its future success? We can’t know for sure, but now, following a number of amalgamations and the launch of four more offices, the current team are certain he would have been proud of how his fledgling business has developed without losing its original sense of purpose.

Teresa, who joined Pinkneys in 2003 and specialises in family law, said: “I think the company’s success is really because the people who work here care so much. Providing a quality service is paramount, and that’s why clients stay with us. They can trust us to go above and beyond for them.”

This spirit of serving the community is echoed by Hayley, who originally trained with Pinkneys then rejoined the firm in 2013, and specialises in dispute resolution (also known as civil litigation). She said: “We have to remember that this could be the first time a person has used a solicitor, and they might feel daunted, upset, or uncertain about what to expect. We can put them at ease, listen to them, and ensure they leave feeling relaxed and confident that their issue is in safe hands.

“Pinkney Grunwells staff are all passionate about their work. Every client matters to us, regardless of whether it’s a big or a small case. I just love helping people. For me, job satisfaction comes from taking problems off people so they can sleep easy, knowing it’s being dealt with.”

Good communication with clients is a priority, as is clarity around fees. Costs are competitive and are quoted in full. Teresa explained: “It’s important to us to demonstrate our integrity around fees so we are completely transparent about costs from the outset. We would never surprise clients with unexpected additional charges later in the process.”

This approach to client satisfaction has helped Pinkney Grunwells achieve the Lexcel quality standard – the Law Society’s prestigious legal practice quality mark. The accreditation is awarded to firms that demonstrate excellence in compliance, client care and practice management, and prove their commitment to consistently deliver services that meet client expectations and assist regulatory compliance.

Pinkney Grunwells cares about its staff, too. Daniel said: “I joined the firm in 1992 as an apprentice, and I’ve had amazing support throughout my career. I’ve taken on various roles including admin assistant, cashier and practice manager, eventually becoming an equity partner in 2015.”

The firm hires new apprentices every year to train up, with the aim of retaining them in permanent positions. Hayley said: “We believe in investing in our employees, to develop their skills and qualifications. We have a lot of home-grown staff with good retention rates, it’s always rewarding to see people climbing their chosen career ladder.”

Respect for colleagues and mutual support are important factors for Teresa. She said: “We have a great work ethic here, we’re like a big family, it’s such a welcoming place to work. I’m really proud of our team, they’re so dedicated.”

    A bright future

This mix of professionalism, top notch client care, competitive pricing and staff development is proving to be a winning combination for the company, despite an uncertain economic environment. “These days, lawyers do their job because they love it. The past few years haven’t been easy but we successfully opened our Driffield office in 2016 and moved our Whitby office to new premises,” Teresa added. “Our aim now is to keep delivering the same quality service and supporting our clients for many more decades to come.”
